illusionists wall mural with MM and menThe Illusionists—Witness the Impossible is like taking a roller coaster ride. You have waves of fear alternated with feelings of relief

The returning engagement of one of the most magical, thrilling and mystifying shows to hit Broadway, THE ILLUSIONISTS – Witness The Impossible is at the Music Hall at Fair Park February 28 – March 5, 2017. It gives Dallas audiences a chance to hold their breath, clutch their seat and gasp with joy when the illusionist who is locked in a case filled with ice water is able to unchain and unlock himself in less than three minutes.20170301_192530

This mind-blowing spectacle showcases the jaw-dropping talents of seven of the most incredible illusionists on earth. And between acts, I kept wondering who finds these people? And where do they come from? Were they the kids who had magic kids and entertained other children at birthday parties?

This is not the first time I have seen The Illusionists. Even after seeing the Illusionists three times I still gasp when the lady holding the balloons is not hit by the arrows. And I give a sigh of relief when each performer escapes doom or whatever dangers his act presents.

The show is held together by a hilarious magician/comedian who introduces each Illusionist and adds a comic relief that is much appreciated after clenching your teeth and worrying if this will be the time when the tricks fail.

illustionists playbillThe seven stars, each a master in their own field, are:

The Anti-Conjuror, Dan Sperry: Described as Marilyn Manson meets David Copperfield, Dan combines the art of magic with the macabre and is one of the top-10 most Googled people, thanks to a legendary “America’s Got Talent” appearance.

The Trickster, Jeff Hobson is the epitome of glamour and showmanship. Don’t be fooled by his innocent appearance; Jeff has audiences laughing long after the curtain goes down

.The Inventor, Kevin James is known for innovative illusions, is an inventor, comedian and collector of the strange and unusual. Kevin is one of the most prolific inventors of magic in the world and has created some of the most celebrated illusions of the last century.

The Escapologist, Andrew Basso: Italy’s star escape artist, Andrew considers Houdini his hero and is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular illusionists. He is the only person in the world to perform Houdini’s famous Water Torture Cell with absolutely no covers.

The Deductionist, Colin Cloud, one of the greatest thought readers of all time is a psychic savant known as a real-life Sherlock Holmes. Don’t play against him in a game of poker – he’s never lost.

The Daredevil, Jonathan Goodwin, is widely considered one of the most creative, skilled, and frankly crazy stunt performers in the world. He is an accomplished knife thrower, archer, escape artist, fakir, martial artist, free diver, and free climber. Unlike the other performers in the show, Jonathan is not a magician or illusionist but he will leave the audience breathless with his death-defying stunts.

The Manipulator, An Ha Lim: The first place winner at Korea’s Busan International Magic Competition (2006), Italy Club Convention Manipulation (2006) and World Magic Seminar in Asia (2007), An Ha Lim was also a Golden Lion Award winner at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas (2008).illusionists on MM head

Some of the acts are very unique—like the man who profiles people and can guess the when you are telling the truth. He had people pick random numbers and somehow they added up to the date.

A lot of the acts called for audience volunteers and they were all amusing. Except for one performer who kept coughing into his hand and then touching his “audience assistance”. He got his “volunteer” by asking for a quarter. She was a good sport about following his directions but not seem to really enjoy seeing the bandage with the fake blood. I could hardly wait for that act to end.

But all of the other acts kept my attention as I waited in suspense for the conclusion. There are the expected card tricks, flowers, birds and flashing scarves. But The Illusionist

Hint: a performer once told me that if you do not want to be picked, do not make eye contact with the magician as he scours the audience looking for a “subject” But if you like being the center of attention wave your hands wildly to get the performer’s eye.

20170301_192530A great show for families. And even if you have seen it before, the acts and performers seem to change.
