Blue Lights (Oddly Enough), the new track from Brooklyn based “The Virgins”, is a little bit Strokes, a little bit Vampire Weekend, with some early Talking Heads and a little bit of George Harrison middle-period Beatles guitar thrown in for variety. It’s being given away as a gimme track from ODDKA┬« brand vodka, made by Wyborowa.

“We recorded this song in the studio at the apartment the whole band lives and practices in. We had just brought up some equipment from Nashville and this is actually the first song we’ve recorded with it.” says the bands lead vocalist Donald Cumming. It was recorded as part of a creative collaboration with vodka brand Oddka by Wyborowa (who filmed a mini-documentary The Virgins – A Day In A Life).

The song takes a little bit of time to start with some fake crowd noise and such up front. Then it kicks in at around 0:49 and swaggers the rest of the way through. Angular piano and guitar tone riffs that are almost (but not quite) lifted from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band stride nicely against the Donald Cummings slightly tortured vocals. The high falsetto backing vocals are a nice touch. It’s hard to describe exactly how there seems to be simultaneously extreme precision set against epic rambling. It all works though. Plus, it’s really hard to beat the price. Definitely a fun track to check out and add to your music collection. Trust me, it’ll grow on you quickly.
