Be inspired for romance at fifty shades of gray fantasy weekend

In celebration of the 50 Shades of Grey movie premiere, the Heathman Restaurant & Bar in Portland, Ore., located at the hotel where the famous couple, Ana and Christian experience their first of many sensual encounters, has concocted a romantic night out on the town for Portlanders and visitors alike. Guests are invited to imbibe with the 50 Shades of Gin cocktail (handcuffs included), enjoy dinner for two (complete with menu items from the book and grey-tied servers), topping the night off with tickets to the film at a nearby theater. Guests looking to extend their experience can also partake in a 2-night stay (toolkit and book included)!

Makes 1 cocktail

1/2 tangerine (cut crosswise) [use a 1/4 if large]

1 1/2 oz Tanqueray gin

1 1/2 oz Fresh Lemon Sour Elixir (see recipe below)

1/2 oz POM pomegranate juice


Garnish: fresh thyme sprig

  • Squeeze tangerine, drop into a pint mixing glass
  • Measure in gin, pomegranate juice and lemon sour
  • Fill with ice
  • Cap and shake vigorously
  • Strain drink into a coupe-style glass
  • Garnish


Fresh Lemon Sour Elixir (Makes 2 cups)

  • 1 cup fresh lemon or lime juice, or 1/2 cup of each
  • 1 cupsimple syrup*

In a large jar with a lid, combine ingredients. Cover and keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks, or freeze.

*Simple syrup is available at bar supply stores. Or, to make it, combine 4 cups sugar and 1 quart water in a heavy pan. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Bottle and store at room temperature until needed. Keeps indefinitely.

Chefs Martha Ortiz & Alejandro Cuatepotzo are creating Culinary Desire, Mystery and Seduction with their” Erotic Menu” being served at Hotel Cacao, the hot new property on Playa del Carmen’s famous 5th Avenue.

 The sexy menu is being lovingly created by Martha Ortiz, Mexico’s internationally acclaimed chef and cookbook author who is heralded for her creative and sensational gastronomic events, and Alejandro Cuatepotzo, a protégé of Enrique Olvera who is Executive Chef of Hotel Cacao.
