How well do you really know this Woman Edited by Madelyn Miller, the Travellady For several generations, a story has become a staple in history classes, and as such it is an American legend: Captain John Smith, captured by the Powhatan Indians and scheduled for execution, is rescued at the last moment by the pleas of a lovely young “Indian princess” named Pocahontas.
Her kindly act saves Smith, but more importantly, by marrying another Englishman, John Rolfe, she played a key role in restoring good relations between her father’s people and those in the Jamestown settlement. ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONSHow accurate is this story? How much is myth? Why has this woman captured our imagination for so long? The Virginia Historical Society will examine images of Pocahontas and compare those to the few documented facts about her life. While the exhibit may not dispel all the myths of Pocahontas, we hope that it will help explain why they were created and why they have endured so long and so intensely.
