Two Fat Ladies

reviewed by Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady

The recipe for a runaway hit cooking show: Place two outspoken, outsized women (Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright) aboard a classic motorcycle and sidecar. Send them all over Great Britain and beyond to prepare meals for nuns, cricketers, diplomats, lumberjacks, and an odd assortment of others. Then throw away the scripts and let the ladies chitchat while they cook. Jennifer and Clarissa serve up funny, frank opinions along with delectable dishes—calories, cholesterol, and political correctness be damned. They shun faddish, health-conscious fare in favor of big, old-fashioned flavor—usually enhanced by bacon, cream, and butter.
All the while, the ladies hilariously hold forth on every topic under the sun, often bursting into song as the spirit moves them

I have always been suspicious of skinny cooks. These two women inspired culinary confidence from the moment I first saw them.

Two Fat Ladies, the complete collection of the most popular cooking show in BBC history that was a Food Network hit in the US is just being released.

"Very funny"—The New York Times
"Long on potatoes, short on pretension"—USA Today

Their generous wit and lust for life remind us that fine cooking—like fine dining—always goes better in good company.

The collection includes all 24 of Jennifer and Clarissa’s adventures, from a Benedictine abbey to the Brazilian embassy.

In the late 1990s, the series aired in the U.K. on BBC Two and was a viewer favorite on public television and the Food Network in the U.S. The series launched several bestselling U.S. cookbooks, and the Two Fat Ladies were even parodied on “Saturday Night Live” by Brendan Fraser and Darrell Hammond.

Jennifer Paterson died in August 1999 while filming the series fourth season.
