Three for Your StockingsConsider these three thoughtful (and very useful) gift ideas for your holiday gift-giving
By Patricia KutzaLuxury gifts are the poster kids for holiday shopping promotions: Their images look great on the printed page or splashed across the Net. I found three products this year that won’t make anyone’s best-dressed list. Nonetheless their benefits will keep on giving throughout the year.
Consider LapWorks newest addition to their line of foldable laptop desks, the Desk Futura. Laptop users who like to leverage downtime between flights will really appreciate a platform that keeps these pesky heat generators off their laps. Lightweight and foldable, the Desk also has a rubberized surface that keeps your notebook from sliding. It’s a nice feature that works well with the Desk’s stand, giving you the optimum tilt for your monitor.
There’s a lot to be said for a beautiful sunset. But driving in twilight can be a dicey proposition, when the fading light makes joggers, walkers and cyclists harder to see. Seattle-based Robin Freedman addresses these vulnerable moments with Crashwear, lightweight, water-resistant reflective vests made from ripstop nylon. The unisex pattern come in four different colors with two different styles of reflective surfaces. Two ample pockets with Velcro closures are good receptacles to free your hands of stuff like cellphones, ids, money, ipods and the like. Freedman’s company tagline “Where style and safety collide” gave me pause to reflect (no pun intended). And I appreciate the disclaimer that comes with the vest: “While Crashwear vests are intended to help you be more stylish and visible to other motorists, they will not protect against drivers who are using a cell phone with one hand, smoking with the other hand, and steering with one knee and they won’t protect you if you are doing the same.”
I enjoy trip planning. But all sorts of things can happen that can turn even the most carefully orchestrated schedule upside-down. My-Bands™ inventor, Maria Giovannoni, got a rude awakening when she was asked on a moment’s notice to provide very specific information about her mother’s health, following her arrival at a hospital’s emergency room. She says, that after the shock of that sudden phone call, she spent countless hours piecing together information about her mother’s medical history.
That frustrating incident spurred Giovannoni to develop a line of wristbands that hold vital medical information capable of being accessed by any PC or laptop that has a USB port. You can revise the valuable data stored in the water-resistant My-Med™ band’s read/write memory as such information as critical medicines, and doctor contact numbers change. Giovannoni has extended this concept to MyID™, a band that contains the same USB memory stick technology. It is smaller in size, intended for children and addresses similar needs as the My-Med™ band: To hold contact and medical information that the holder, in an emergency situation, may not know or be in a condition to share on their own.
