two airplanes chasing pink and greenairplanes
I did not realize how topical this story would become when I started it. The strange treatment of passengers has been a dream for comedians but a nightmare for the airlines. Who would have thought they’d see a doctor dragged from his seat. (which he had booked and paid for) The world saw his underwear and then heard he had a concussion and his nose had been broken. Someone said it looked worse than being a prisoner of war.

A family that was not seated together wanted to change seats. They had bought a ticket for their toddler but the airline employee was not very helpful or sympathetic. They insisted

My favorite comment was by  Bob Payne, a travel writer who posts a short humorous blurb on his Facebook page every day. https://www.facebook.com/Bobpayne49  He observed that Spirit Airline’s passenger brawl prompts World Boxing Association to consider holding airport events.

1. If you drive your own car, you can leave when you like and will have no worries about your seat being oversold. No one will drag you from your seat.

2  You can board whenever you are ready. No fighting for overhead space, you can stash everything in the trunk. So you can bring everything you want and might need. No special handling lines for skins and golf. And the problem with taking your skis or golf clubs on a trip is that everyone going to the destination probably wants to bring their own equipment, too.

3 If the weather gets bad, you won’t be stuck on the tarmac. You can stop for a snack or even go to a museum or historic site enroute if the weather doesn’t seem like it will blow over soon.

4.  I always wanted to be taller. Then my clothes might not be so tight. But I have changed my mind on that.I am so glad I shrunk 2 inches during the past few years. I might still be able to cross my legs. Being two inches shorter might make the legroom seem more spacious.   I just heard that American Airlines is shrinking the legroom by  2 inches in the economy section of their new Boeing 737 jets.  This does make car travel seem much more pleasant.pink AND GREEN planes

5. Food is so much more available when you drive. On a plane, if you are not smart enough to bring some healthy food, your choice is overpriced airport food or stale small snack bags. The free handout snacks would definitely not have any weight watchers points. If you try to order a special meal, you might be the last person served and everything will be soggy.  And even if you want to purchase an expensive salad or sandwich, It seems like they run out of what I want and sell the last one to my seat mate. It seems the only thing they have when they get to me is Pringles. A tube of those makes me thirsty and feels greasy.

6. When you fly, stewards will wheel a noisy cart down the aisle. If you have an aisle seat, you can get up quickly and the steward can serve you easily. But you will still be stuck passing beverages and food to the rest of the row. In a car, everyone can have their own snacks to eat when they want.

7.  Sleep. If you are lucky enough to be able to sleep on a plane, the pilots announcements of where you are and how many miles it is to the destination will usually wake you up. But that might be better than listening to sibling fighting in the back seat.

8 Bathroom breaks. In a car, you can go to the bathroom anytime you want. No folding seats for you. And if you are at a nice hotel or restaurant, there are spacious bathrooms that sometimes even offer you hand towels or amenities. They are always cleaner than airport restrooms. Have you ever seen a steward clean a toilet?

9. Destination flexibility  With a car, you can change your mind about where you are going. If there is a national disaster, flights will be canceled. Airports will be crowded. Vending machines will be empty. But there may some great deals on tickets.

10. The sound of music Bob Payne thought of one more reason why it is better to drive than fly.Bob Payne thinks another reason driving is better is is that you can sing, usually as loud as you want. Even Jimmy Buffett songs. Since I do not sing in the shower, I would never sing around my friends and family in a car. I think if I sang on a plane, everyone would ask to change their seat. And nowadays, you might get kicked off the plane for even trying to sing.
